Solidago golden rod
Hi all, just bought a golden rod in a pot. Read up about it and seems to be quite rampant. Before deciding on it's final position in the garden does anybody know just how rampant it grows? Is it a matter of pulling up a few stray bits? Or will it take over the whole bed? Or maybe leave it in a large pot (like I do with mint)?
Thanks, jimthelead.

Just did a quick peek at the RHS site and it states that some are invasive. If you know what sort you have you could check out how bad/good it gets.
Conditions play a large part as well and some plants can romp away while others are well behaved. I have a plant in my garden which I love and others on here wouldn't touch with a barge pole because it grows like a weed in their conditions.
Looks like a lovely plant in the pictures. Find out how it spreads. It might be easy enough to hoick out round the edges. I hate the plants that spread underground and are the divil to dig out.

The traditional tall golden rod of my childhood was a real coloniser.
I have one called Solidago caesia which seeds a bit but doesn't invade by roots. Shorter as well, couple of foot or so. Of course, it won't seed if you don't let it.

That's good news Jim. It spreads by seeds so just weed them out. Or dead head in advance.
Thanks all for your input. I think I will plant it in a bed I've just cleared and keep a look out for any seedlings. If it does spread underground, I'll have to keep on top of it as best I can.
