Stabilising a bare soil slope

monaco87monaco87 Posts: 1

Hi, first post here so apologies in advance if I've chosen the wrong section to ask this question.

I have a large patch of bare soil at the bottom of my garden about 4m x 4m which is quite steeply sloped. I'm worried about the effects of heavy rain over time so I want to plant something to both cover the slope and help stabilise it against run-off. I could always just let nature take it's course but I'd prefer a bit of control rather than just weeds.

It's quite steep and hard to work on so I'd need low maintenance plants which can tolerate medium shade and preferably evergreen to suppress weeds, reasonably fast growth too if possible. Are there particular plants which meet this criteria with a good root system to bind the slope together ?

Hi monaco87. Welcome to the Forum. you could try some of the hardy geraniums for stabilising the soil but they are not evergreen. Vincas would also help and they are evergreen. Go for Vinca minor which comes in a few different colours. Brunneras are good for medium shade - again not evergreen.

  • I would suggest covering the area with chicken wire (preferably) plastic covered, then sow coarse grass seed.
