Laurel hedge issues....
Hi All.....I was hoping to get some advice regarding our laurel hedge and have read through a couple of threads but wasn't sure if our hedge has the same problem.....
Basically we have a hegde next to the wall round our garden which was planted when we moved into the house 4 years ago and at both ends the laurel is nice and green and looks healthy but in middle few metres it looks yellowy and poor and you can tell there is something not quite right with it but I don't know what!
If anyone could offer me some advice I would be very grateful as I am by no means a gardener!
Many thanks, Jane

Many thanks for your reply - I have just tried to post a photo but failed!
Nothing has been sprayed on them so if I did dig one up, what would I be looking for?
Hope this works!
It's quite a narrow area and quite a lot of hedge. As Tetley says it's probably lack of nutrients or water. Both easily remedied. Mulch around with organic matter and water in feed for instant help. I wouldn't start worrying just yet.
The other thing is that over a length of bed like that you will get different conditions. It may have been filled with soil from different places. Slightly more light in the morning, slightly more in the evening, that kind of thing and that will all make a difference to the individual plants.
The good thing is that you're not dealing with tiny plants but with much sturdier fellows who will probably recover ok. Just give them a good feed for now and see what happens.
Thank you both very much.....re water do they still need water with all the rain we have had or is it more of a case of them fighting for it and with the space they have they will never get enough? (sorry I am very much a gardening newbie and after 4 years of looking at the rubbishy hedge, thought I best do something about it!)
Also what is best to give them as feed?
A general purpose fertiliser will do the trick. Some encourage flowering and some leaves but ask at the GC and they'll keep you right. Read the packet carefully as well just in case you've asked a newbie.
They will appreciate a good watering during dryish spells and once you have applied a mulch that'll keep the soil nice and moist.
....and another thing, that's not a rubbish hedge. It's rather lovely!
Haha thank you!
That's been a great help thank you.....I know where to come with all my gardening woes now.....!!
No Tetley, no floods......apparently the soil is clay if that makes any difference, I was talking to a neighbour today as I was hacking at a holly tree....(but that's another issue!!)
Mulch....? Is that just well rotted compost?
It can be. Or bark chippings (but I find they blow away). Stones even. Anything that covers the surface and keeps the moisture in. Spent mushroom compost will break down eventually and then you can dig it in to improve the structure of your soil.
We'll soon be able to see this hedge from space Tetley.
Haha! Hopefully!!,
