Vine weevil grubs I'm afraid Julie.
As you can't use pesticides on edible crops, try Nemasys Vine weevil nematodes which you just water onto the soil. They are a bit expensive but do work.
Thanks I did think that's what they were, I will get some nematodes and treat the other containers just in case but the other plants are looking healthy, I have cleaned off the damaged plant and replanted it in a new container with new compost so fingers crossed it will survive but I may not get any fruit now this year, thanks for your help
