Help with patching a lawn
So apologies if this is a stupid question. I put a treatment down about 1 month ago to kill moss and then scarified the moss.
I then mixed grass seed with top soil and scattered in onto the patches and stood it down. I'm no expert!!! I'm watering it every day.
is this right or do I need to completely cover the seeds? How long until it's long enough to mow?
sorry if these are stupid questions????

No need to water every day Peter. You'd only need to do that if you had a very long dry spell. Just keep an eye on it, and if the soil is drying out give it a soak and then leave it again for a week. Birds will sometimes eat the seed so if you can net the patches that will also help. Depends on the area you have though.
It takes two to three weeks for grass seed to germinate, depending on soil and overhead temperatures. I've just done some little patches and would expect to see a bit of green in a couple of weeks as the temps are reliably a bit higher here now.
Once it's a few inches you can cut - don't scalp it though. Keep the cut high and do your grass every week at least to encourage the grass to spread sideways and thicken up. You can still cut the rest of the grass - it won't affect the patches you've sown.

Thanks FG. Should the seed be covered with soil or fertiliser it's currently a little exposed...

I don't think it mattes too much Peter. The patches I did on Friday are as a result of building work being done and the grass was damaged with materials and workmen being on it. I just scraped the bare soil surface a bit first, added some compost and scattered seed on top, lightly mixed in, and firmed down.
I only created that area of lawn last summer, and it was a bit bare round the edges towards autumn -it was a windy day when I seeded it and I was a bit wary about getting more on the gravel path than on the lawn area! I simply sprinkled some seed on top at that time and it was all growing well after a month.

Peter 212, I mix compost washed sand and seed, scratch the patch so it is loose then dust the compost sand seed mixture on the patch, smooth it level with existing grass then scatter another hand full of seed just to make sure and shuffle it in with my hand then water. Never any problems though as to cutting I usually wait about six weeks then shear it a couple of times before letting the mower loose on it.
Frank.
