lettuce seedlings/Cucumber seedlings

I made a mistake a bought a cheap branded multi compost. The seedlings are just not growing.Still very small ,after 5 weeks( pricked out.). I am thinking of changing the soil.
I now have John Innes no 2 compost. Can i have an opinion from you all whether to use this as i haven't any J/I no 1.
I need to drive a 38 miles round trip to the shops.
A lesson to be learnt.Never to buy a cheap soil again.
