Is this a dodgy graft on a tree or is it normal?

Hello,

I have found an ornamental malus tree I would like from a local garden centre however I am concerned that the graft does not look very clean.  I am not an expert an I notice that often they look a  bit like this but if I buy this is it likely to cause me problems?

Any advice appreciated as in every other respect it is the perfect tree for me.

many thanks

It is already healing and the bark around the collar should continue to grow and cover the scar completely in a few years.  I would be happy buying that one. image

See the image at the bottom of this page to see how the process should go (in this case a walnut tree, but applies equally well.):

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
