Best way to fill Planter

Hi all,

What would you suggest I fill the planter with as I believe mpc wouldn't be ideal in the long run of things? Perhaps 1/4 well rotted manure?

I'm planning on planting a large flowering clematis in the centre & small lavenders either side so perhaps some sharp sand would be helpful?

Cheers in advance people! image

Hi Mark56. I would use John Innes Number 3 with the well rotted manure. You are quite right in avoinding mpc. Your planning arrangement sounds perfect.

Mark, I would rethink what you're planting in it. Clematis need a cool deep root run and that's just too shallow. Mixing clematis, which need plenty of moisture with lavender which need sharp drainage, would be a nightmare as neither would be happy. I'd go with climbing annuals and bedding for that container.

Have to agree with Dave there. Clematis would not be happy. They can take a huff even when you give them what they like which is cold feet and hot heads!

There are loads of annual climbers the most obvious being sweet pea and you get a great scent from those too.

I was thinking on impulse because I've brought too many lavenders this year image but on reflection it makes perfect sense when they both have opposite requirements for growth.
