Mini Greenhouse/Growhouse

I'm thinking ahead to next year really. This year we used our windowsill to sow seeds indoors and it limits how many things we can start off indoors. We have no space for a greenhouse but could squeeze one of these in http://www.wilko.com/mini-greenhouses/wilko-4-tier-mini-greenhouse/invt/0310723 it's a 4 tier mini greenhouse with a removable plastic cover - a bit like a raincover on a pushchair.

My question, can you start seeds of in these and leave them out overnight covered up in the greenhouse? I have plans to grow more next year if I can.

The other option is a shelf in our shed in front of a large glass window - we won't be able to leave it open in the day time or open the window - it's just a pane of glass.

Any suggestions please?

I bought my dad one of those little plastic jobs and he ended up with six or seven. He loved them and he could move them easily as the conditions changed. Too much sun, shelter of trees etc.

The only problem he had with them was that after a year or two the plastic went brittle but they're not expensive so he bought new and kept the shelves for my mum's shed. Loads of folk on here have them so you'll get lots of advice.

Hi MetalViolet, I sowed seeds for the first time this year but started mine off in my potting shed as although I have one of the plastic greenhouses, I worried it would be too cold for them. I would think your shed would be similar to my potting shed so personally I would start them off there. I did move my cosmos, zinnias & lupins to the greenhouse but I think snails got in & started lunching on my zinnias & lupins  so after having them out in the sunshine during the day to harden off, have moved them back to the potting shed at night. You can also buy replacement covers for the greenhouses if they tear as mine did a few years ago after heavy snowfall.

  • Thanks for your advice everyone :) My shed isn't a potting shed it's my Husband's very overfilled shed, he is planning on putting in a shelf for me at some point. He is also planning on getting another shed for a mini workshop as we have no garage etc. I might be able to steal a shelf there too. Hmmm I might see I can persuade him to let me steal a spot at the end of the garden then. I could be starting off some more lettuce right now if I had the space. Frustrations of a small (kind of) garden :D
