How to use farmyard manure

BalaBala Posts: 113

Hi, I have recently build a raised bed (18ft x 3ft x 1 ft).  A store nearby offers farmyard manure on sale. I am clueless as to how to use/apply farmyard manure.  Do I mix it with top soil? or Do I just spread it on top? or Do I bury them?

Thanks

Hi Bala. Make sure the manure is well rotted before you use it as if it is fresh it actually removes nutrients from the soil as it breaks down. Are you using the bed for veggie growing?

As you have just built raised beds, I would put a thick layer of FYM (assuming it is rotted) down first.  Then fill the bed with whatever you intended to fill it with and then another layer of FYM.  You could also mix it all up.  I like using FYM as a top layer mulch as it is very good at suppressing weeds and the worms work it in.

If it is unrotted you will have to be careful how you use it.  I have used FYM fresh sparingly as a mulch or dug in; if you use too  much fresh it could burn the plants so be careful.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.

Thank you so much for taking your time to provide answers.  It is rotted manure.  The raised bed is for Veg and Flowers.  I'll mix it with topsoil.  Thanks again!
