What species of tree is this?

Hello,

Continuing my poor luck with trees, the house we moved into twelve months ago has a tree that doesn't appear to showing signs of having new buds or leaves this season.

I've tried scraping the bark and inspecting the buds. The trunk seems OK but the buds are brown and hard. It looks like it will not leaf at all this season.

I've attached some pictures. I have a few questions that I'm hoping you experts may answer:

1) What species of tree is this?

2) Am I just being impatient?

3) If the tree is stressed, do you have any ideas as to why?

Thanks in advance.

Look like a cherry of some sort. If all the shoots are like the one in the last picture then I think it's had it. It's had a lot of branches cut off it in the past and may have just had enough of life.

There are a few trees not yet in leaf but the buds are swelling and these are not

I agree with nutcutlet. Sadly the tree looks as if its dying.

Thanks for the fast reply nutcutlet.

Over the last 12 months I've spent a lot of time cutting back overgrown bushes, hawthorn hedges and Ivy. I've removed the weeds and grass around the base to help it out as best I can.

My tree surgeon also recommended a good pruning to encourage new growth and I'm now worried that it might have been too little, too late.

Here is a bad picture of the same tree from last July show its leaves.

Unfortunately from what I can see most of the buds look the the one in the picture.

Will a hard cut back to the trunk help or is this the end?

Well there is nothing wrong in trying but I wouldn't hold out too many hopes for it. If its not actually in your way at all then try and see what happens.

Fledgling I'd take it out completely. Cut your losses.
