My father picked up a twig a couple of years ago and just stuck in into the ground. Now this is it. We have no idea what it is?

Oh dear - that's going to grow into a gigantic tree - can you persuade your father to use his green fingers/thumb to grow something more suitable for your garden
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I would try and dig it out before it gets too strong a hold. As Dovefromabove says it will grow into a giant and shade out everything in your garden.
