I found that the sonic repelants have worked for me but only after a year!. A couple of months after putting them in the borders just looked worse like the moles were partying. I was so disappointed and wanted to pull the sonic stakes out but they were wedged in and somehow I never got round to removing them. The next year, early spring when I'd had most damage previously there was hardly any at all and past 3 years they've definitely moved on. Agree with Posy, for me it wasn't so much the lawn but the damage they did to the borders upending all my young plants. Now I've got a replacement acer in the spot where the previous one was killed and its looking great with no disturbance.
For the humane amongst us, trapping leaves them wriggling until the 'mole man' checks his traps. I'd prefer shooting for an instant solution. It's what I've done in the past.
The man we had used traps that allowed no wriggling. The effect was instant. I don't shoot and anyway, I have never even glimpsed a mole above ground. Obviously, no-one really wants to kill things, but destroying moles is neither better nor worse than vine weevils, lily beetles or rats, and most of us put our gardens first.
