Fade resistant plant labels
What is the best label system to use for identifying plants for many years? I have used indelible ink on plastic labels but they fade in the sun within months. I have tried it on wooden lolly sticks and they rot. I have a selection of fruit trees that I would like to label with something that will remain clear after many years. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am trying copper labels for fruit trees and shrubs. The biro leaves an indent in the copper label and so will always be readable (So they say). I wish i had invested in a set of letter punches to make them look better...
I use a white pen on black t-labels for permanent labelling and so far (3 years in) they seem to be staying pretty clear. I've even used the pen to write "Use this one" on the current dalek compost bin so that OH knows where to put the vegetable peelings.
