my copper beech is sick!

I've got a beautiful copper beech.  It's a mature tree, probably 35+ years old.  This year it has got hardly any leaves and those that are coming through are quite small and pale.  Many of the branches are bare.  The trunk looks fine, although a woodpecker has attacked one branch. Has anyone got any ideas what might be the problem and if I can save it?
