Hardening off

Hi everyone,

I put my plants (courgettes, butternut squash, kohlrabi, sunflowers and zinnias) outside in a plastic greenhouse and left them outside all day with the front open.

This is the first time since germinating that they have been outside. They've been out for around 12 hours and all looks great and as the weather is so warm at the moment, I'm wondering if it would be ok just to leave them outside overnight with the front closed?

Hi Jordan. Keep an eye on the weather forecast but that should be fine. You've the wall behind your greenhouse which will act like a storage heater.

Put something heavy on that bottom shelf, a bag of compost or some bricks.

First time I used one of those many moons ago I lost all my seedlings when a gust of wind knocked the whole thing over.

Keep an eye on nighttime temps and remember to open it up every day, they can get very warm and frazzle your young plants.

  • Thanks for the responses. Good idwa, I'll put something on the bottom shelf to keep it weighted image
