Bark problems

Can anyone help? I have two apple trees (in different parts of the city) and both appear to have the same problem.

the bark appears very thin and cracked in places almost as if the trees have been "ringed" this has caused them to die.

one got badly scorched of the allotment last summer but the second is in a large pot at home. On cutting the dead wood off it was obvious looking at the cross section that 80% of the area was dead. This tree has begun to shoot below the split bark.

my question is what is it and how do I deal with it?

All help gratefully received, many thanks Penny.
