Carrots

Doesn't seem to matter what I do, they just won't germinate.  Any advice would be welcome.

What have you tried i.e. what kind of soil, what depth, which area of country and microclimate, source of seeds, watering frequency etc?

I sowed seeds in February in compost in a large pot by a sunny south facing wall. They germinated in March, took a wee while. I sowed seeds in compost spread on beds of clay soil in mid to late March, they were up in 2-3 weeks. Later sowings are up too. I made little trenches, 1cm deep, spread (too many) seeds, covered 'em up, and watered regularly until they were pretty much all up. Watering is required early on.
