Wasp Deterrents

Hi all,

I know they don't feed on nectar but does anyone have any knowledge of natural deterrent for wasps such as certain plant types?

Thanks,

Bobby

No I don't know but there is a fake wasp nest you can put up but it has to be in early spring before they come out:)

  • Thanks for the advice Logan, I did think about this as I had seen it online but I don't think the good lady would be happy to have even a fake one hanging about.

Hi Botanic Bobby. I cannot think of any plant that would fit your need. I have a healthy respect for wasps as I have had three anaphylactic episodes over the years but I am loathe to kill them if I see them. Last summer I was pottering in the garden when I heard this faint scratchy noise and it took me a while to track down the source. Eventually I traced it to my garden shed where three wasps - in a line were chewing grooves in the shed door presumably to make their papery nests elsewhere. I had visions of the local newspaper with the heading 'Wasps ate my shed!' Quite amazing insects and as long as I know where they are I leave them alone.

I've often watched them on fences Ladybird. Fantastic to see them harvesting the wood  image

Bobby - I've used a simple trap of a jam jar with a bit of jam in it. Place it away from areas you want to keep them away from - dining areas for instance. It keeps them happy enough. There aren't any plants that they stay away from naturally as far as I know.

I like wasps and don't have any problem with them, but I appreciate that some people worry about them in the garden especially if they have young children. A few sensible precautions can help though.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

If you have jam at a picnic or a piece of chicken the wasp will go for the chicken. We sperimented one day. image
