Deer resistant !

I live in a bungalow and the front garden is east facing but still gets a fair amount of sunshine. I am doing a main bed in which i want a main plant as a focal point. It must have either flowers or varigated foliage . My neighbour says that deer wander down the road at night and have eaten certain of her plants , they seem to like roses in particular. Any ideas for plants that will be safe ?

Hi sunshine preferred. One plant that fits your criteria is Choisya ternata. You would have the benefit of sweet smelling flowers in the Spring and if you choose the golden variety, attractive foliage although the green one is lovely too.

Sorry, posting a photo doesn't seem to work!

  • choysia is a great plant for deterring deer, you can also use the spring bulb scillia

They leave hydrangea macrophylla (? Spelling) alone, but eat the paniculata or arborescens types.

Pieris are ok too, as is the viburnum plicatum mariesii.

For flowers, alliums are fine, so are peonies, oriental poppies, euphorbia, lupins, the half hardy rudbeckias (something like rustic dwarves), echinops, buddleja, lavender and most herbs.

....as you can see, I have been gardening with deer for a whileimage.  Its a bit of a challenge, but definitely possible.  I spend a lot of time peering over neighbours fences to see what they are getting away with too.

Roses and tulips are a massive no-noimage

There are deer in the forest very close to me, but they have never come into the garden since we lived here, though they had been down to the stream to drink while the house was empty - we found their slots in the mud.

We do get the occasional magical sight of them though, like last summer when they came to graze in our sheep field and we disturbed them inadvertently. Sometimes we can see them on the far side of the valley, late on summer evenings, where they go to enjoy the last of the sun.

    The best of both worldsimage

I agree Buttercup - seeing them is magical.  Thats why the family won't let me fence off the whole gardenimage.  So I have one fenced area (we call it the flower cageimage) where I grow all my treasures, and then I just have to be resourceful for the restimage

  • Thanks for all the suggestions. due to the new forum i was not notified my email that anybody has posted. Lets hope they fix it soon.
