Floppy phlox

What's the best thing to do with phlox that is flopping over? I planted out a clump of five or so blue boy plants a while ago, and they shot up really well....and seemed to be doing much better than other plants I stuck in the border at the same time, but now two or three are having a lie down!

If it makes any difference it has been very hot here the last couple of days......but the rain is giving everything a good water today.

thanks!!

To the best of my knowledge phlox needs support in the border. I know last year everyone got very excited about MD's plant supports so I'll try and find you the link.

Sounds like they grew a bit fast and haven't had time to ripen their stems to a woodier stage. I grow lots of phlox and in a windy site too and never need to stake them, but we have cool springs here usually, so they grow slowly.

  • Thanks Plant Paper, will take a look at that. Think supporting is the way forward. Or shorter phlox next time maybe!

I've never needed to stake phlox. They are one of the few plants that  don't flop in my garden.
