Possible laburnum doing badly

Hi all

please forgive any gardening ignorance. I love pottering about in the soil but I'm still very much learning!

we moved into our house last year and inherited a plant at the front which I think is a laburnum. When viewing the house it had lovely rich leaves and flowers. However last year only leaves came out and flower buds died off. And this year the few leaves that have started to emerge with flower buds appear to have withered and started dying off. Could anyone please help me identify the problem?!

I think it's hydrangea petiolata, A rather sad one.

It's called something else now but if you google that it will come up.

It likes a bit of shade and not too dry. It looks to be a mature plant, nothing lives for ever, maybe it's just reached the end.

  • Thank you ever so much

Oh dear, poor thing. It's such a shame as it was gorgeous in bloom. It faces east  it's in the shade by about 12ish depending on the season. It seems to start off the year just fine and shoots out and then just fails.

I almost don't want to give up on it for that reason but I suppose if it's a lost cause ...

  • Thank you! I have been wanting to do away with the silly pebbles anyway. Just hadn't got round to it yet with small baby. I'm now kicking myself for not watering it more. It looked lovely against the wall.

We have terrible soil here Too. A mix of the natural clay and the leftover builder's stones etc from when the houses were built in the 50s.

Always wanted a wisteria (I know, yawn) so

maybe I'll try that. or maybe researcher some

    more shady hardy climbers

  • Apologies for the terrible typing. Trying to respond on my phone as no home internet and Safari doesn't like the text box!

  • What fabulous suggestions! As well as very helpful notes on preparing the area again. The prospect of pulling it out is a bit daunting!

love the Henryana, what a gorgeous set of leaves

  • Goodness. Apologies. I realised I typed laburnum the whole time when I actually meant VIBURNUM. Quite a difference!

It's good that it's neither so you won't have to remember which.

I'm always mixing laurel and poplar, (the words, not the plants) image No idea why, there's not much similarity between the plants or the words
