Can't resist a bargain!

Lena NLena N Posts: 189

I'm so excited!!

I bought some clematis at The Range yesterday, I couldn't resist as they were only £2.75 each! I have bought Cardinal Rouge, President and Montana Rubens.

The Rubens has lots of little buds on it - should I wait until after it finishes flowering before potting it up?

The other two have no buds yet so are they OK to pot up now?

Many thanks image

Hi Lena - are they not in pots already? I'm guessing at that price that they're small plants so they would need potting on for this year anyway to let them  develop good root systems before planting out in the ground.

If you can find good deep pots - the kind you normally buy older clematis in, that would be ideal. It allows the roots to get nice and deep. If not, use something a bit bigger than they're currently in.  If you plan on keeping them in pots long term, they need potted on into bigger pots gradually before they go in the final pot,  and it will need to be a decent size to allow plenty of soil to provide them with enough nutrition and water to keep them doing well. Bear in mind that they'll need a lot more attention if they're in pots though.

Montanas are not pot specimens, they need to be in the ground  - they're different to the other two varieties you've bought. Pot that one on and then get it into the ground later this year or next spring.

Hope that's of some help image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Ha ha! In my excitement I forgot to say they're in 9cm pots but their roots are poking through the bottom so I think they're ready for potting up.

We are currently renting but are in the process of buying a house and I'm hoping to eventually plant them in the ground against some trellis in the new garden once we've moved (and once they are big enough). There is lots of fence and the garden is south east facing so I hope they'll be happy there.

Thanks again for the advice image
