Invasive Species
A month or two ago there was a thread about people buying plants and seeds from China and elsewhere from dubious sources. It sparked a discussion about the ethics of this. I have had concerns about invasive species. In today's Guardian there is an article about this. I think it is worrying; think of Spanish Bluebells hybridising with the native English bluebell, Himalayan Balsum choking up our waterways and there are concerns about others. Here's the link

The more flamboyant plants in gardens are all aliens. I don't know how you could tell in advance which ones would become an invasive nuisance in the UK

That isn't the point Nutcutlet. The fact is several (maybe more than several) are known to be invasive and causing problems now. It is this that needs to be addressed. The Environment Agency spends millions and millions removing invasive water plants from our waterways and wetlands.
The problem is that some people don't care - a next door neighbour at a previous house filled his back garden with Himalayan Balsam - he knew that it was invasive - he was an awkward character who loved the flowers and the bees they attracted. He didn't give a damn about his neighbours' gardens and he was only renting the house for a few years so he didn't care about the long term effects in the garden either.
