  • Hi

I've been using one of those wooden/plastic mini grow houses this year for the first time, usually I grow on windowsills and floors inside before planting out end May but we're building so I needed a temporary Growhouse.

I've been surprised how much these growhouses fry the plants inside, I lost my first batch of young plants so I suggest check it every day and consider moving the growhouse to a less sunny spot if you see wilting or scorching. They're so small it's hard to keep an even temperature and you may well need to water every day and open the top or door on hot days.

When the weather warms up you may want to move the lettuce outside into a shadier spot, it bolts (runs to seed and tastes bitter) if too dry and hot.

    Good luck.

Open right up during the day - I protect some of my plants that don't like too much sun with sheets of newspaper - I take the sturdier ones out of the growhouse during the day and put them back at night - and only water enough to keep the soil just damp - not sodden. image

I have a mini greenhouse too, one I can stand up in this time.. I knew it would get too hots as my mates poly tunnel has this problem too. So I had a brain wave and I bought a pack of Fleece and used it double and tied it to the frame so it drapes from the top of the roof and down the sides, depending on how the sun hits you.. Its working great and my poly tunnel buddy is now copying me... On account of his missus wanting her bed sheets back..image

He he, there is a bonus to living in NE Scotland after all, too much heat, what's that lol.

Mine stands inside a double glazed conservatory and rarely gets too hot, but ventilation and shading are the way to go, good advice on here from all the other growers.

It's difficult to get the temp right in the small growhouses especially. They can get very cold at night and boiling through the day. I open mine all day and only close at night. You just have to remember they don't offer the same protection as a proper greenhouse, and try and judge it according to your conditions. image

In the two hot summers we had up here (2013/2014) mine still got extremely hot during the day. I only use it for tomatoes, but  vigilance with watering is key.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
