Fish Pond

good morning everyone I know most of you on here think  I'm truly amazing lol! but I need some ideas on a project I have now started working for a wonderful couple who really appreciate what I have done in there garden over the last month.

it is not an overly large garden but what a fantastic spot wild deer running past as I mow. any way they have an old fish pond which I have started to fill in as they want it slabbed over for seating, how ever I want to make it a focal point whilst they sit out side on there patio they can look across the garden and admire the flower bed I want to put in some large but not massive plants.

one idea I had was to use crocosmias in the middle as they clump together and are the right height then use smaller plants possibly day lillies dropping down to sisyrinchiums and finally phlox subulata ( creeping moss ) remember as I said we get deer running by as there cottage is located within a large estate so there are no fences I would also like to fill it with daffodils and either tulips or blue bells for colour in the spring.

finally the great thing is that I have electricity from the old fish pond pump to put led lights in coloured of course to make it shine at night any ideas greatly welcomed god bless have a lovely weekend if your in my area this weekend pop in for tea and cakes

Bulkerb, best wishes for your new project. Hope you will be happy with the new people. Sorry, but coloured LED lights appear garish to me among planting although they can be  effective lighting up a tree from the ground.

May I suggest something for the four seasons including evergreen, autumn leaf colour as well as flowers.

  • Hi

I'm a big fan of Photinia standards as they look great and can be under planted.

Is there a possibility of keeping a very small section of the old pond by the new seat - even if just a large bucket sized hole - with water? The local wildlife and returning frogs would greatly appreciate it as they'll still seek out a bit of water once it's filled in.

If the oldies are going to be seated in the new spot often perhaps add some fragrant plants too like nicotiana or stocks? My nicotiana last year must have flowered for about 6 months. Great for a few quid.

And ps-worth googling deer resistant plants, I love the deer at the end of our garden but found I had to fence off bits as he eats almost everything and was quick to come further into the garden once I'd planted it up.

    Good luck!
