They are a bulb and are really beautiful. I have a couple of clumps and I love them. They enjoy damp areas, so I find they grow well in my clay soil. Prince Charles grows them along with alliums in his wildflower meadow at Highgrove!!
I have a clump in my west facing border - two years old and bulking up nicely - in bloom at the moment amongst tulips and wallflowers and looking pretty.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

I first saw them at Kew Gardens a couple of years ago. Gorgeous.
