Plant ID please

Whilst continuing clearing out the 'dumping' corner in preparation for the playhouse build, I found this (and three rose bushes hidden in the hedge, hurrah, but that's another story!)

I'm sure I saw this at a plant sale the other day - it smells quite minty?

Of course, feel free to tell me I've been sniffing a weed :)

    If it smells minty ....

    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • ... It's mint? :)

  • NUUUTTTTT! :)

I don't like it much to be honest, but I'm not giving it much of a chance without seeing it in flower :)

It does look like a mint but it also looks like one of the verbenas (catmint). When it flowers it may be easier to identify it.

The leaves look heart shaped? So it might be Great Bindweed

    Certainly not bindweed.

If it's mint it will smell like mint

Catmints  (nepeta not verbena) also have a smell

Teucrium hircanicum is a possibilty if no smell to the leaves

  • Wah, well I was just about to buy a nepeta, maybe I should hold off for a bit?! It might not be the colour I want though.

Whoops, I got cross with it and may have been a bit brutal with it yesterday *shamefaced*. I'll dig it up and pot it until I see what the flowers are. It can't stay where it is, it's in the way of playhouse progress!

    Thanks all !

looks like lemon balm to me. Melissa officinalis. it's a perennial from the mint family. it's lovely and well worth keeping. has a gorgeous smell. pinch out the growing tip to encourage it to bush out.

Yep, it has a nice sweet yet minty smell. The stems are a bit fluffy, too.
