Allium leaved

KeenOnGreenKeenOnGreen Posts: 1,831

I still have a couple of weeks till our Alliums flower. The leaves are shading some other perennial shoots. How soon, if at all, can I cut the leaves back without reducing vigour in next years flowers?

Most alllium leaves die back of their own accord as the flowers open. I plant mine among things like hardy geraniums that hide the dying foliage. All bulbs need the chance to make as much food as they can, you have to plan for this and give them the time or else accept fewer flowers the following year.

Thanks. The foliage isnt actually visible. I just don't want it to cut out sunlight to other plants. I'll just leave it on the plants but shove it out of the way a bit.
