Trellis hole size and growing climbers? And

Louise BLouise B Posts: 81

Hi,

Im looking to use a trellis as a wind break with some climbers growing up it.

I was thinking that I'd get the smallest hole size for the wind but does that limit how well a climber will grow?

Do I need to thread a climber to get it to properly cover the trellis?

Any recommendations of a climber that doesn't have ivy type leaves but is dense and fairly vigorous. Preferably something with a bit of added interest like seasonal colours or scented flowers.

Thanks

Hi Louise. I personally prefer trellis with smaller holes as it gives a more solid look if the climbers are deciduous, and also gives better wind protection.

However, some climbers will find it more tricky to wind in and out and you will need to tie them in as they grow. I mainly grow Clematis and there are loads of varieties to choose from depending on your aspect and site. You can have something in flower virtually all year round if you pick carefully.

Take a look at Taylor's online site and you'll find plenty of advice re size , aspect and pruning etc. Be warned though - they're very addictive! image
