I was inclined to put them downwards but everything I read/watched said lay them on the side. I wish I had come here and asked instead! Well hopefully they continue to grow. Thank you all.
Thanks Rosemary I will try that. I have put the pots on a table outside for now so the slugs can't get to them. I might try the copper ring, thanks. Will slug pellets work also? I can scatter some around the plant when I've put them in the ground?
Rainbowfish, isn't the shed too dark for them? Are they growing yet? That's cool if they are, next year I can try the shed too. My mum planted a dahlia last year too, and also didn't dig it up over winter because she forgot exactly where it was. We looked today and it looks like it might be coming up as I saw a shoot and it's not one I planted. I didn't see it last year but if it comes I will ask her if it's bigger! I think I got some Unwins, Pom Poms, Fireworks and Crazy Love. Good love with yours and Chocolate Cosmos!
Mine are in the shed's window. They are only just starting to shoot. Was hoping the shed would be cooler than the house but still frost free. Think I will move them to my mini greenhouse as the nights are getting warmer. I will just have to keep an eye out for frosty nights.
I hope so! Most of them are coming up. Just got to hope the slugs don't get them when I plant them out. Yours will be fantastic too! Dahlias are so pretty!
Is it too late, my dahlua tubers are firm but lack of slug control has meant all new growth eaten . Currently in ground where overwintered aand having just dug some up tubers themselves are healthy. If I potted up with slug controls could I still get flowers this year?
Or leave where they are but slug control them in ground.
I'm not sure. Sorry that your dahlias got damaged by slugs already. I'm sure somebody on this forum will be able to advise as to whether they will survive in pots.
Last year I started a tuber off at the end of June in a pot and it was the biggest dahlia i have ever grown pot it up with some good quality compost and it will reward you Lou19
I also think it's not too late. panicked in April as it said on these dahlia tuber packets - plant by end April. It was so much work to start everything in pots. The one my mother had in the ground from last year popped up and has been growing at the same rate as the ones started in pots, so it shows that if I'd waited til june and just put in ground it would have been alright. Same goes for pot now I think.
I grow quite a lot of dahlias and use a lot of containers and at the moment I would say that the ones in pots are doing better than the ones in the garden. Some of my plants have been damaged by slugs and snails and I find that one of the snails favourite hiding places is under the rim of the containers. Some of my smaller plants have now started budding so am looking forward to then flowering.
Thanks for the advice. Will pot up initially. If they get sprouting away from slugs I will return to ground. Lots of orange spanish slugs. I generally go around with secateurs about 10 pm but totally missed Dahlias.
I have also been using a garlic foliage spray with some success on nicotianas but need to reapply daily with this heavy rain. Will be using slug pellets with my tubers in pots.
