Large conifer tree roots

I have a large conifer tree (over 25ft) about 30 years old, which is regularly trimmed but large roots (showing above the grass) have spread across the garden probably about 5ft from tree. Can I remove these roots without damaging the tree? I catch them when mowing the lawn and the grass doesn't grow properly around them.
