Red Robin

Dear all, my red robin has grown to be 8/9 ft high by 7 ft wide it's massive and the border gets wider every year.

I would love it to be 4x5 ft but of course all the growth is at the end of the woody branches. If I cut it back hard to the thicker wood branches will it sprout new branches and become thicker. Basically, will it regrow or not? Has anyone ever cut one back to the ground?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Verdun is right. I inherited some when i moved and instantly got rid of half of them. I regularly cut branches back, lovely as the red leaves are they grow like mad. I cut twice a year by 50%. They have survived without any sort of feed or pampering. In my early years of gardening i cut one hard back below half way, which was obviously quite a shock to it and it turned up its toes. The falling leaves are a nuisance but i do have a row of them cut into standard size so they look like a row of trees and by regularly trimming back they are always look good, red and the leaves do not fall. They are a toughie!
