Potato problem

in Talkback
I bought some Charlotte seed potatoes but they refuse to chit. Should I just plant them regardless?

Hi Lulu I think Jim on beech grove planted Charlotte this week but he said the soil needed to be warm . I don't think giving them another week to let the soil warm in the heatwave predicted
I find spuds grow even without chitting. (But I'm no expert)
That's strange, all the Charlottes I get from the SM shoot like mad as soon as I turn my back on them! Perhaps put them in a poly bag somewhere warm?
Lulu are you planting in the garden or in sacks?
This year my Charlottes took a long time to chit but when they showed a small amount I planted them in my sacks, in GH due to still having frosts
they are growing well.
Agree with primrose you don't have to chit.
I grow Charlotte. Every year I set them out to chit, then two months later, they look just the same,so I plant them anyway. They do fine. I tell myself that perhaps they have begun to chit internally and are just waiting to burst forth when they're planted, but I don't know whether it makes the slightest difference. Don't worry about it.
Ironically, supermarket potatoesin the veg rack in the kitchen are sprouting after a week or two. Perhaps I should put my seed potatoes there and pretend I'm planning to eat them, so as to scare them into chitting.
Hi all
i have planted seed potatoes without chits and they have produced a great crop.
After the north east weather change today i have finally planted all the seed potatoes i needed, gave a few away to allotment friends and now await the return.
The Mrs is also exstatic having got the utility room at home back for the year bless her, and yes there has been plenty of processeco bought to keep her sweet
Happy gardening
I've planted two types of potatoes this year - Charlotte and Rocket. I put the Charlotte ones to chit months ago and nothing happened so I planted them anyway. The Rocket ones I bought much later and they produced loads of shoots almost immediately.
Thanks everyone, I 'll just plant and keep me fingers crossed
