do plants other than roses get black spot?

I've noticed what I think is black spot on one of my roses, so will be dealing with that today.

However, it seems that there are one or two plants nearby which also have the same look to their leaves. Is it just roses which get black spot, or can it affect the leaves of other plants, too?

  • Are you saying I need a wash, Verdun? image I just had one!

Seriously, though, is the fungicide used in rose sprays suitable for other types of black spot?

The 'affected area' is against a wall on quite a packed border, so probably doesn't get great airflow.

Yep, now you mention it I've seen it on hellebores - I had some black spot on one of mine earlier in the year, I just cut off the affected leaves and disposed of them.

I don't think theres a an effective fungicide against black spot. I agree with verdun, keeping the ground clear underneath your roses of fallen leaf will help control it. Also either burn or dispose of it well away from that area. And never put it on your compost heap.
  • Weirdly enough, I just looked at it again - the rose is actually ok! It's a plant right unerneath it that has affected leaves. I'll clear that one out, I think.

All plants have their own black spot causing fungus. The pathogen is specific to the particular plant, so Black spot on Roses is only going to affect members of the Rose family and probably only roses in that family.

Any decent Fungicide would help, but as said, airflow is most helpful. Remove any affected leaves and destroy rather than compost, even fallen leaves.

If you want to see really spectacular black spot then look at Sycamore leaves in early autumn!
