container (?) roses

MaryMary48MaryMary48 Posts: 9

I have just bought some roses in containers. The salesperson advised that I shouldn't put them in the ground until June. Which leads me to suspect that they were only recently containerised. Surely I could put them in the ground now for better development of root system - I haven't peeked at the rootballs yet - than keep them in pots?

Yeah.... I have no idea what June has got to do with it,

Other than being freshly potted up?

The advice you were given is quite correct.   Most roses you see now in containers, if not left over from last season, will have been freshly potted as bare root roses.  What will happen if you try to plant it now, is that the root system won't have had time to grow around the potting soil, which will all fall away as you empty it out of the pot... which will mean you will effectively be planting a bare root rose... this will suffer a severe check in growth and need much watering to get it re-established.   By June the roots should have developed sufficiently so that it can be emptied out of its pot with everything intact..

look underneath and see if you can see roots in the holes at the bottom of the pot. If not, I'd say you can leave them, however, you can perfectly safely plant them carefully now.

I disagree that they will suffer " a severe check" if done carefully.

Containerised roses can be planted at any time of year Mary. It doesn't check them, they take a year to establish whatever way you buy them. Newly planted roses need weekly watering, bare root or containerised, makes no difference. Planted correctly second and subsequent years are always more floriferous. A lot of GC advice I hear about is suspect to say the least.

I bought 2 climbing roses 2 days ago. The nurseryman said to plant them out straight away, but compost fell away revealing little white roots. I gave them a big watering can of water each and they haven't drooped at all, so I hope they are OK. I water newly planted roses every week anyway.

Thanks Guys & Gals for the replies. I'll wait until this hot spell has passed, then go for putting them in the border I have prepared. Saw (my) first swifts yesterday; suddenly it's all happening and I'm running to keep up!
