Geraniums

Now that the weather is warming up a little it was time to plant out our geraniums today - have to admit that we didn't grow them but they do look lovely & normally flower until the snow or frost (if we get any) in usually in January or February. They don't seem to attract bees or butterflies though.

It is warming up a little. Its above freezing. No way am I putting out pelargoniums until I can walk barefoot to the washing line without getting frostbite.

  • Oh Ceres, I feel for you - and no I wouldn't be putting out pelargoniums there either - we are so lucky here and the weather is supposed to stay reasonably mild here now ....... well at least that is what we have been told.

I admire your confidence in the meteorological experts.

  • Well I haven't very much Ceres, but this colder weather can't go on forever can it....? Most of my seedlings are still in the cold GH & we haven't planted courgettes out yet, but the potatoes are a good 4 - 6" high even though they have been banked up once already this season - on the days when the wind drops the sun is quite warm here.

I live in South Wales and my geraniums are left in pots in a sheltered spot and re grow and flower.

I have lost a couple on occasions tough.

For a small island, set of islands, we get quite a range of temperatures. I haven't even thought about planting seeds in the greenhouse, and there is no room in there anyway as all the overwintering plants are in there and huddled together for warmth.

Pelargoniums were mentioned in the 'slug explosion' story as being particularly unattractive to them. image
