1940 wooden greenhouse reglazing

We moved into a house which has an old wooden greenhouse with heating and electric. The glazing is almost non existent, and the glass panes slide in and are puttied. With small metal pegs trying to stop the glass sliding out. Any advice on how to replace glass and type of putty to be used. Plus how to prevent the glass from slipping as the metal pins are made anymore. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I have to say I've never actually done this, but I'm pretty sure you need proper old-fashioned linseed oil putty, although I wouldn't be surprised if there's some modern mastic that would work.

You might get glazing pins from an old-fashioned ironmonger or hardware shop; otherwise you can use copper or brass (not steel) panel pins or hardboard pins.  Use a small hammer and slide it along the glass so you don't hit it.

You want greenhouse glass which is cheaper and less perfectly flat than window glass.

    hi jacqui50

type of putty used is general linseed putty used for glass glazing.

It would be great to reinstate the wooden greenhouse as they are and always have been quality growing homes.

A good glazier would be able to cut and replace glass and putty point secure the glass, which would also include the metal clips which hold the glass in place securly

If you get it reinstated post a picture on the finished project

    Happy gardening and good luck

Hello Bluebaron, I am in the process of restoring a very old wooden greenhouse. Thank you for sharing this clip. How did you manage to get the roof frame in place? Mine is 10’ by 20’ or so. I thought lifting the roof off would be impossible!
Sadly some pieces of the timber are in worse condition, rather chopped about. I have been using white exterior wood filler as it will be painted white. Did you use glaziers points or panel pins of any type to hold the glass in place with the putty? What sort did you use? I have used panel pins on some of mind that have rusted so I wondered if brass or copper would corrode less.
