Sweet chilli.

Hi all, I picked up my tomato plants last night, from a local guy who grows them from seed, ??2.50 for 12 plants, and a bonus of 3 sweet chilli plants, I've never grown chillies before, and am wondering if I can realistically grow them outdoors in the west mids. I've potted them on into a 9inch pot with some jacks magic compost, and I'll start hardening them off in a couple of weeks. But the question remains, will they thrive outdoors? I have'nt got a greenhouse. Thanks in anticipation, Pat.

Pat, it's possible in a really good summer but they really need to be grown under cover in an average UK one.  They will do fine on an indoor windowsill if you have one that gets sun.  Otherwise perhaps you could knock up a cold frame or similar?  A frame of wood covered with clear polythene or polycarbonate sheet is easy to put together.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thanks for that Bob, I have found a place for it, inside in front of the patio doors, I'll put it out on the patio when we get the searing heat of summer image

Assuming they are Capsicum annuum, I agree with Bob. They can grow outdoors if sheltered from wind in a sunny spot, but wait till June to put them out. They do best on a windowsill, my overwintered one has pods on. They can do very well in a cold frame.
