moving peonies

Hi It's completely the wrong time to move our lovely peony but we are re-designing our front garden. I would like to transplant and save as many plants as possible. If I do move the peony now, what will happen? Will it not survive or will if just not flower this year?

You may lose flowers but that's about all hurdy-gurdy.

I moved some peonies and bunged them in elsewhere on a live or die basis. They thrived. I know they supposedly don't like being moved but I haven't found this to be the case.

    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • Losing flowers I can live with! Thanks guys
  • Thanks aym280. Had no idea about the loose roots - good tip!

As I said, few flowers this year for a plant in the right place next year is easy enough to live with. They're going into a sunny spot in clay-ish soil like yours so fingers crossed.....!

Thanks. Managed to move it yesterday. Hadn't realised how big it had got! Hopefully planted at the same level as before. Now in a really sunny spot (previously part shade). It was so large, a couple of parts broke off in transit so hopefully I now inadvertently have 3 plants ???? All still looking healthy yesterday evening.

Ha! Will do. Fingers crossed!! I used to have peonies with gorgeous white double flowers with a deep maroon flash at the base in my old house. If there are no flowers this year I fear I may be tempted to go and buy the same for this garden ????

  • Quick update - lots of well developed buds on moved peonies and several just on the cusp of opening I think! I must have a tough hardy plant!!

    Thanks all for the advice
