Once they finish flowering just lift them with a trowel or hand fork or garden fork depending on the size of their clumps and then tease them apart with your hands.

Soak the roots in a bucket of water to loosen the roots if needs be then plant again in soil improved with garden compost or in pots of good planting compost.   Water in and they'll grow away.

    Have they finished flowering Barry?

I normally just dig them up and pull them apart by hand after the show is over.

  • I collected seeds from mine last year and left them in a seed tray to germinate in a cold frame over the winter.

I've now got about 12 free ones growing so well /big I'd plant them out if it were warmer, must be the easiest seeds I've ever sowed.

Fyi in case you're looking to get more rather than thin out/rejuvenate old ones..
