Thank you everyone that's certainly food for thought (no pun intended). I love broad beans and any kind of bean so will start there and see how we get on
Don't bother trying broad beans this summer, it's too late, but you could start some in the autumnfor next year. French and runner beans might do their stuff in August, but not broad beans.
They do like it cold, actually. Maybe Magpie's right (Good morning, Mr Magpie, and how's your wife?) - stick to runners/frenchies for this summer. Aquadulce is the BB variety to sow in October for a crop in May.
Too late for this, that and the other! Where do you all live?
I won't be putting my Runner Beans and French Beans in for another couple of weeks yet as the ground is still too cold and wet yet up ear! I always put the seeds into the ground too I don't start them off in pots first. I've only just put in my Broad Bean seeds this weekend and I sometimes put in a second sowing later on in May for a second crop this year.
For the same reasons I haven't sown my Pumpkin and Squash seeds yet otherwise they'll be ready to go into the ground too early because the ground is still too cold and wet!
As a kid I can remember an old man "Old Man Bill" who are family used to share an allotment with never putting anything out or sowing anything in the ground before May was out (Other than Onions and Potatoes). Regardless of the weather.
Consider tripods of Borlotti beans - start them off in pots now and plant them out later - allow the beautiful blotchy red pods to ripen on the plant and harvest the beans for drying - they'll look fantastic, and you did say you like beans

Mark, Lou has said that he/she'll be planting out in July - I think that's what people mean by 'its too late'.
To follow my suggestion of Borlottis they'd have to be grown on in big pots until July, but at least if harvested for the dried beans they'd make the most of the autumn

How about some small fruit bushes? You can get patio raspberries and blackberries these days. And strawberries don't take up much space. I know it's not veg (but I think it's better than veg! )

You'll love them more when you taste those you grow yourself!
