    Slugs or snails around?

Slugs and snails are the obvious candidate given the netting. Slug pellets are fine, the net will prevent anything eating them apart from slugs. You could also start cabbage in modules, that way they are easier to protect.

I did use slug pellets and the plants were grown in my greenhouse over winter. Many thanks for your reply's.

Did you use enough pellets? The organic ones dissolve in rain, and the normal ones do not last that long. I suppose mice could have eaten them, but my mice are well behaved, so I don't know what mouse damage looks like.
