mmmn, realised that was the case, as I have had a meeting a couple of months ago, with a tree felling company who came to look at the tree, & explained this aspect to me. They told me at that time, that they would be instructed ( by the Railways I assumed) to prune the tree only, & not remove it, describing what you said about the balance. But thankyou for your comment. Today's team of tree fellas, told my daughter they will be taking the whole tree down, & be back to finish the job, & then left. (The 2 stories differ!) What is done is done now. If they dont come back to cut & remove the rest, I am interested in what happens to the tree, if it survives the heavy cutting, & if the prolific Ivy growing through it, could kill it/should we cut the Ivy off as best we can? etc. At present our lovely oak is left looking pretty bleak, has changed the aesthetics , & has removed our summer shade. So we are mourning the loss of this "beauty" today. But we are planning to plant another cherry tree or the like, to redress the barren skyline a bit, to sow grass where it wouldn't grow under the oak, & re-think the planting at the bottom of the garden now. The reference to tree fellers reminds of an old joke, about a couple of blokes looking for work. They are reading the vacancy notices in the Labour Exchange (see I said it was old), and saw one for tree fellers. "What a shame" says one of them "There's only 2 of us"
