Just wanted to take a survey of what people use as mulch for their hostas in containers. I'm thinking about using some dark red coloured bark to set the green leaves off perfectly.
I had a hosta growing in a terracotta pot, until I planted it in the ground. I used pebbles to cover the soil, they really contrasted well with the foliage colour. I haven't used anything else other than that though.
Most of my hostas are now planted into the ground in my garden though.
I have hostas in pots and in the ground. 2 pots have gravel, 1 doesn't, 2 large plants in the ground have a ring of gravel around them - I'm waiting to see if the other 3 I have in the ground return as they were decimated last year. I use a sharp gravel though, not pea, works a treat, not a mark on the protected ones.

Nothing. Just the compost they're growing in.

I have all my Hostas in pots dressed with pea gravel it seems to keep the slugs off the plants.
They do climb up the pots but then give up their quest to venture further.

Mine take their chances in the ground, few slug pellets underneath.
I feed them but I don't "mulch" as such.
I remember Alan Mason ( I think ) saying :
" when I had 20 Hostas , I thought I knew it all. Now I have 200 and I realise I know nothing"
I'm far from being an expert, just a fan.
Another 10 plants to-day, but too sore to go check them out. Will do that tomorrow.
Indeed so, the day you learn nothing is the day they screw down the lid.
I've never mulched plants in pots to be honest, seems a bit of a faff.
The whole garden gets a good mulch 100mm / 4" depending on one's preference at least once a year.
