Pruning a greengage tree

I have a 3 year old greengage tree which has never been pruned. This year it has only got 4 blossoms on it. I've been told I should have been cutting it back quite hard every year. What can I do now and in the future to get it back into shape and produce a good crop of fruit? I know you are meant to lightly prune now and can do more in July but I need more detailed advice about cutting back this year

Thanks very much, that's very clear and helpful

  • We have spent a lot  of time pruning our Damson and now are looking to prune our Greengage. Is it too late to do this? We live in the Isle of Wight so I'm hoping we'll get away with it but advice very welcome.

  • It's late August and in July I potted up some California poppy self sown seedlings. They've grown well, should I plant them in the beds now or keep them in pots and protected until next spring?   Also I sowed Calendula seeds which need pricking out, the same question. Should they go in the beds now or next spring.  I'm new to expanding my plants like this as I used to buy them ready grown. Lockdown has seen me experimenting but I would really appreciate someone's advice on how to go forward. Thank you in anticipation.

You would be better starting your own thread rather than resurrecting an old thread about a different subject.
