Choosing a tree that provides cover at height but not low down

dominomandominoman Posts: 150

My garden faces North East.  The right hand side (looking down the garden) is where the sun comes from.

Previously that side was heavily planted with sycamore, plus lots of very large bushes, so the rest of the width of the garden was in shade.

I'd like to plant a new tree there, to add height, but one that won't cast a shade across the whole garden.  Are there any tree that look good and have a long trunk but with leaves only near the top?

  • I have a silver birch called Snow Queen, it's one of the smaller birches which grows straight up,makes a good height and has a white trunk early in its life.

Also there is a Hawthorn called Stricter which is a smallish tree but as its name suggests it grows straight up.

  • I have a flowering cherry at the end of my garden which provides beautiful

blossom in May and leaf cover from June till October so I think one may suit

you. Like most trees though you have to think of root growth in later years.

Also it covers an ugly street light,so double bonus

Silver Birch is good.  The leaf and branch structure is kind of open, making it airy.  It will not cast a lot of shade and any branches that are low you can cut off.  It is also very good for wildlife and makes a nice rustling sound in the breeze.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
  • I agree with what you say Redwing they are beautiful and when the sun shines

    behind them they are magical.

I have one in my front garden but the growth rate upwards is quite rampant..
