Purple sweet potatoes-anyone growing them?

I`m thinking of growing some Stokes purple sweet potatoes this year. They are full of antioxidants, especially   anthocyanin. They are grown from “slips”. I have bought a kilo of them to try, (and eaten a 3rd of them) image  and will probably start the slip production  process soon, but will no doubt use large tubs when I plant the slips, as opposed to putting them in the garden.

I've never grown sweet potatoes, but a friend has, and has had most success in large containers in the greenhouse.  They certainly seem to do better with some protection, at least.

  • Yes, certainly the specific ones I mentioned need the sun, and they need to be in & out within about 4 months, so that is about May to August.

They featured very prominintly in a TV program the other week, about how to stay young! The residents of Okinawa put their excellent health and very long lives down to frequently eating great quantities of it!

I toyed with the idea of trying them after the program, and after reading your post, I have just been to buy some! Still not 100% if they are to eat or grow from...image

I grew Beauregard and another variety in the ground in 2014 with very little knowledge and experience, and so am keen to see what some good preparation and growing conditions could produce!
