tulips

rosemummyrosemummy Posts: 2,010

last year I did 3 'lasagne ' pots, they flowered beautifully with Iris reticulata first, thendaffs&tulips, but this year we have tulip leaves ( mostly looking distinctly unhealthy) no flowers at all, doesn't look like tulip flower though I may be wrong, I did top up with fresh compost and tickled a tiny bit of slow release feed in but not til feb/ march, any advice welcome, thankyou in advance all again!

The tulips I lasagned last year are not doing as well as last year, although the daffs are all right. I think most pots are best with new bulbs each year, and i plant the old bulbs in between perennials in the borders.

I tend to go with Monty on this, and regard the majority of tulips as annuals.  There are the odd ones that comeback year on year, but very few.  The little specie ones do that best - but the lovely hybrids really do need replacing each year.  Have fun choosing.

I find that tulips really don't do well after the first year though there are gardens around here where the things come up year after year and look okay. Wish I knew the secret of getting them to last.

I planted some the past 2 autumns, the 1st ones (which I ordered pink but were lemony white grrr) have come up looking great,so I think I'll see what happens..my husband bought me some red and yellow ones when he went to Amsterdam ( lovely thought, how can I get him to notice I really don't like red or yellow?!) they haven't come back at all well, they're yellow/brown with one bud that I don' t think will open

I'll do as fidget suggests and plant in borders ( if I can find space ) it'll be interesting to see if they come back next year, the thing is , I'm sure I heard/read the pot 'lasagnes' were supposed to give you a few years
