Clematis Montana

B3B3 Posts: 27,503

I know I have some dead branches on my clematis. But how can I tell for sure?Sometimes I follow a dead-looking twigs to find leaves sprouting out of them. The scratching with a thumbnail thing doesn't work.

Is there a time of year when the dead ones are obvious?

In London. Keen but lazy.

There should be juicy buds all over the plant by now.

The finger nail test should work

There should be green just under the surface.

I've tried that but some twigs with leaves are brown underneath. There is plenty of foliage, but I would like to clear out some of the dead stuff
